What Does it Mean to Get Your Tubes Tied?

After pregnancy, many women make the decision to have a tubal ligation, also known as having their “tubes tied.” This is done as a method of permanent birth control to prevent the possibility of becoming pregnant in the future through traditional methods.

Does Tying my Tubes Impact my Chances of Becoming a Surrogate?

The answer is no. Tubal ligation does not impact your ability to become a Surrogate.
Women who have their tubes tied still qualify to be a Surrogate mother through Gestational Surrogacy and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Gestational Surrogacy requires a technique called In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In IVF, the eggs from another woman (intended mother or an egg donor) are fertilized with the sperm of a man (intended father or a sperm donor) outside of the body to create an embryo. Then the embryo is implanted into the uterus of the gestational Surrogate and she then carries the child to birth. In this case, the child is not biologically related to the Gestational Surrogate.

In Gestational Surrogacy and In Vitro Fertilization, the embryo is formed in a lab and it will not be introduced to the uterus before being formed. Thus, fallopian tubes are not necessary for this process. A woman could have no fallopian tubes at all and still be able to carry a healthy baby until the baby’s birth. In fact, women who have had their tubes tied are preferred candidates when it comes to Gestational Surrogacy because there is zero chance that they will become pregnant with their own child during the process.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Surrogate?

The matching stage between the Surrogate and the intended parents comes first and is completed as quickly as possible. To complete the matching process, it typically takes 1-3 months. After being matched, the legal process and the screening process occurs which usually takes 1-3 months. Once the Surrogate has been cleared to start with the IVF cycle, Surrogates are typically on medication for 3-4 weeks before an embryo is transferred.
