Can You Be a Surrogate If Your Tubes are Tied?

Hundreds of women around the world are helping other couples start families of their own by becoming Surrogates. However, to qualify to become a Surrogate, you must fulfill a number of requirements. One of the most common questions we receive in regards to becoming a Surrogate is: Can I become a Surrogate mother if my tubes are tied?

What Does it Mean to Get Your Tubes Tied?

After pregnancy, many women make the decision to have a tubal ligation, also known as having their “tubes tied.” This is done as a method of permanent birth control to prevent the possibility of becoming pregnant in the future through traditional methods.

Does Tying my Tubes Impact my Chances of Becoming a Surrogate?

The answer is no. Tubal ligation does not impact your ability to become a Surrogate.
Women who have their tubes tied still qualify to be a Surrogate mother through Gestational Surrogacy and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Gestational Surrogacy requires a technique called In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In IVF, the eggs from another woman (intended mother or an egg donor) are fertilized with the sperm of a man (intended father or a sperm donor) outside of the body to create an embryo. Then the embryo is implanted into the uterus of the gestational Surrogate and she then carries the child to birth. In this case, the child is not biologically related to the Gestational Surrogate.

In Gestational Surrogacy and In Vitro Fertilization, the embryo is formed in a lab and it will not be introduced to the uterus before being formed. Thus, fallopian tubes are not necessary for this process. A woman could have no fallopian tubes at all and still be able to carry a healthy baby until the baby’s birth. In fact, women who have had their tubes tied are preferred candidates when it comes to Gestational Surrogacy because there is zero chance that they will become pregnant with their own child during the process.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Surrogate?

The matching stage between the Surrogate and the intended parents comes first and is completed as quickly as possible. To complete the matching process, it typically takes 1-3 months. After being matched, the legal process and the screening process occurs which usually takes 1-3 months. Once the Surrogate has been cleared to start with the IVF cycle, Surrogates are typically on medication for 3-4 weeks before an embryo is transferred.

Why Should I Go Through an Agency Instead of Going Independently?

Discussions related to cost, doctors, escrow accounts, scheduling appointments, and lawyers can overwhelm and stress the relationship between the Surrogate and the Intended Parent(s). By having an agency manage the process and all of the details, the Intended Parent(s) and the Surrogate can remain stress-free.

How Much Does a Surrogate Mother Get Paid?

The starting pay for most Surrogate Mothers is $30,000, depending on experience. For more details on compensation, contact us and one of our experts will be happy to provide answers to any of your questions.

What are the Health Risks Associated with being a Surrogate Mother?

A Surrogate pregnancy has similar risks to a regular pregnancy. It is important and necessary that the Surrogate consults with their doctor prior to, during, and after pregnancy.

What is the Ideal Age for a Gestational Surrogate?

In general, the ideal age for a gestational Surrogate is to be between the ages of 21 to 40.
