Surrogates need to meet highly-specific criteria to help a family grow, and the guidelines for that are set by each agency individually. Each requirement is based on proven criteria that makes the daunting process of IVF and IUI easier and more comfortable for both parties. All the requirements listed in this article are specific to Simple Surrogacy; they may be different at other agencies. However, Simple Surrogacy does have one of the most forgiving prerequisite lists in the industry.
There are a significant amount of medical requirements for potential surrogates. The medical process for gestational surrogacy is a highly refined and experimented upon scientific procedure. All requirements here help assure that the child and surrogate will be safe. Surrogates must be between 21-42 years old, have a BMI under 33, and not currently be on any psychiatric medications to work with Simple Surrogacy. These requirements can differ in exact numbers but tend to be in the same ballpark. For example, Simple Surrogacy has one of the widest age ranges for our surrogates, knowing that many women can carry healthy pregnancies to term in that age bracket.
Another set of requirements lends itself to the social situation of the surrogate. It’s critical to make sure our surrogates have the necessary support at home financially, emotionally, and socially. This factor can affect the surrogate’s personal satisfaction with their surrogacy journey, which is a top priority. Our agency asks that surrogates with spouses or partners have the approval of their partner to continue. We also ask that the surrogate not be on certain types of government assistance: some forms of assistance are jeopardized by the surrogacy process. The stability and happiness of our surrogates is important, which is why we set up requirements to reflect that.
Finally, there are a set of legal requirements for surrogates. All agencies have these prerequisites to ensure that the agreement will be successful. Our requirements are to stay compliant in our state in the US, so they may differ depending on location. Things like a valid Driver’s License, the ability to make your own legal decisions, and willingness to meet with an attorney (at the Intended Parent’s expense) all factor into whether a surrogate will have a successful journey.
