The journey to becoming an Egg Donor or Surrogate is a beautiful and highly rewarding one, but it is also not necessarily an easy one. Even under the best circumstances, it involves asking your body to perform an incredibly involved task – for somebody else. Therefore, it isn’t a responsibility that anybody should head into blindly or take lightly. Here are some things to consider when determining if becoming a Surrogate is the right choice for you.
Am I healthy?
This can feel like a loaded question, and in some ways, it is also a subjective one (after all, everyone has their own ideas of what constitutes “healthy”). That being said, it is a crucial one when determining one’s eligibility for becoming a Surrogate. Here are some health factors and lifestyle choices that may preclude a potential Surrogate from eligibility, or otherwise make surrogacy inadvisable:
Chronic or life-threatening illnesses: anything that may be passed on to the child or may threaten the health or life of the Surrogate during pregnancy
Smoking, alcohol or other substance abuse
Being extremely overweight: risks include gestational diabetes and high blood pressure, the latter of which can lead to pre-eclampsia, which can cause seizures during pregnancy
Do I have support?
Support isn’t one-size-fits-all. For a Surrogate to have the best possible experience, it is very important that she has both emotional, financial and practical help from those around her. Ideally, a candidate has a supportive and enthusiastic family and friend network who can help her with anything from being a shoulder to lean on, to literal help getting to appointments, or whatever else the Surrogate in question may need.
Am I comfortable talking about my history? As in, all of it?
Part of the process of becoming a Surrogate or Egg Donor that perhaps surprises people the most is how involved a process it is. Through the course of your experience, you will be asked detailed, and sometimes invasive, questions about your personal, familial, medical and professional history. You must be comfortable not only answering these questions but doing so truthfully to the best of your ability in a legal setting.
